#47: Happy little secrets...

So I know that my summer, while amazing from a creative standpoint, may have come across as slightly stressful for me.  There were a couple really awesome things that happened, though, that I didn't share through Ye Olde ElJay.

Why?  Probably because I was really enjoying sharing them in a more face to face manner.  And because I was sort of holding on to them as lifelines to happy.  Because by not posting, I could keep retelling the details without 'Oh, yeah, I read that...' popping up 3 sentences into the story.

So here's the first (not in chronological order):

The folks from Un-Scripted (the Puppet Show People) called to ask me to audition for their winter musical.  They were sad to see I'd not signed up for an audition spot, and wanted to check to see if they could convince me to come in.  That's the happy part.  Unfortunately, because of the holiday banquet schedule, there's really no way I could do it this year.  But still... they liked me.  They really, really liked me.

More later, when I feel like sharing another.

#66: Birthday Wrapup: Aught Seven

superior
So this may not have been the most adventurous birthday1, nor the most surprising2, nor the most painful3, nor the most naughty4, it is notable for two reasons:

Birthday 2007 is the proud recipient of the "Longest Celebrated"5 and "Most Cakes"6 honors.

It all started back on the 18th.  merlinofhcaosTurk and esmerelCarla joined me, Chef Forrest and family, and Catering Manager Cara and husband at Suppenküche for brunch.  Hearty German food and beers7... it was blissful.

Fast forward to Thursday.  Cake at Moron Life!  YAY!!  Tasty cake, too, which was fantastic.

Then comes Friday.  When I was supposed to be heading to DMV, Laura (Beer Activated Girl) kept finding excuses for me to hang out at the restaurant even though I was done.  Then there was cake and champagne and Sees Chocolate8.  Then DMV.  Then I got home to find a package from my parents which contained my now most favoriteist jacket.  Sooooo awesome.

Saturday brought early morning DimSum at the Hong Kong Flower Lounge in Millbrae with Cliff, Andrea, [info]technocowboy, [info]melibabe, [info]lonespiritwolf2, [info]gconnor, [info]goldenlily, and [info]swami_bob.  Surprisingly, the service was fantastic9.  Unsurprisingly, the food was great.

Post Sum, [info]swami_bob joined me up in SF to hang out with Shaun and Hans before the Oui Be Negroes show.  I sat in on the post show jam, and then Shaun turned the closing night party into a quasi birthday party, complete with shamrock cookies and cheesecake.

Then, this morning, there was brunch with the restaurant staff at The Garage.  Mmmmm, bread pudding French toast.  Soooooooooooo tasty10.  And there was another cake.

So, yes, this year is the year of partys and cakes11.

The Emperor's New Clothes... err... Throne!

sock puppet klae
So tonight my desk chair gave up the ghost. With a loud pop and much in the way of vertigo, Old Chair and I decided to part ways.

Brokedown

I can't really blame, Old Chair. Part of the problem was my fault. I knew, two years ago when we started this whole relationship that there were issues. Mostly concerning a couple of Old Chair's screws that were... not quite loose, but not tightened all the way. I suppose there was a way to fix the problem, but to be perfectly honest, my screwdriver just wasn't big enough to do a thorough job. And with that screw untightened, it put undue stress on the rest of the framework, and things just bent all out of shape until they couldn't hold together anymore. Tonight's breakdown was the ultimate result of that.

And so, off I went to the Chair Market. One of those office type places where the Chairs are just lined up, wooing you with their price tags and cries of "Me love you long time." I felt squeamish about the lineup at first, and wandered among the Chairs that were more casually displayed among the Desks and Printer Tables. But they were all faux leather, or too cushiony, or just way too over the top for my tastes... and so I headed in.

It has to be degrading for those poor chairs, stuck up on a platform, on display for the whole world to see. I felt bad even looking at them-- but it was what I'd come for, and as such, I had to make the first move.

I knew I wanted to avoid any Chair that was all into the leather/pleather thing. I'm not a tiny man, and when my thighs sweat, I don't want them sticking to some pleather wrapped hussy of a chair, especially in this California heat. So my first attempt was this two-toned cloth number who was actually NEXT to the platform, which allowed me to give her a little test drive (if you know what I mean).

But despite the breathable fabric, something just wasn't right. Maybe it was the fact that the cloth felt a little bit like the disposable fabric that is some sort of mutant hybrid of Brawny Paper Towels and ER Scrubs. She was nice and all, and I really didn't mind the two-toned thing, I'm all about diversity, you know? But it just wasn't going to work.

I did a lap around the platform, doing my best not to join in with the catcalls and hollering from the little 4 year old Asian child. It was about half way around the inside where I spied New Chair. She was lovely. All mesh and executive looking. And sexy sexy sexy. But her price tag was a bit out of my range. I mean, I'm not cheap, but I'm no sugar daddy, either. And so I walked on by.

But there was nothing else! All of the other hussys on the Market were either plastic, pleather or leather, and my thighs were NOT going to stand for it. And so, reluctantly, I lifted New Chair down from her perch, and with a bit of hesitancy, gave her a little sum'in sum'in right there between a couple desks.

Let me tell you, it was the best I'd had in quite some time. Granted, that's not sayin' alot since I'm on my feet all day at work, and Old Chair was so brokedown. But damn... meshy seat and back, lumbar support, head pillow. New Chair was a sight for sore buttocks.

And once I'd had her, I couldn't give her up.

The Emperor's New Throne

So here we are, still in the fresh and new stages of the relationship. We're still working out the kinks, of course (I've adjusted her armrests twice and lumbar support once while typing this). But I think it's gonna work out all right.

Now if I could just get that other bitch out of the house. Jeebus she's starting to get annoying.

There is nothing more brilliant that craving something sweet and turning around to find cookies that you had placed on the table but forgotten about a mere 10 minutes before.
